9th Step / Long-Term Amends
“Yes, there is a long period of reconstruction ahead. We must take the lead. A remorseful mumbling that we are sorry won't fill the bill at all. We ought to sit down with the family and frankly analyze the past as we now see it, being very careful not to criticize them. Their defense may be glaring, but chances are that our own actions are partly responsible. So we clean house with the family, asking each morning in meditation that our creator show us the way of patience, tolerance, kindness and love.”
Alcoholics Anonymous pg.83
I realize after a life riddled with self indulgence and destructive habits that a mere mumbling that I am sorry will not correct the problem. Step 4 helps me begin to see my intolerable traits. Now I can admit them honestly with the people I have harmed. There is absolutely no need for me to criticize them. My job is to see my mistakes and be willing to make corrections and ask for God's help where I am lacking in power. Nothing more is necessary.
