The #1 Offender
“Resentment is the number one offender. It destroys more alcoholics than anything else.” To resent means to re-senitise or re-feel. We recall events where we perceived that others had wronged us. We replay these events in our minds over and over again much like the slow motion replay in a sporting event or movie where someone is injured or harmed. As time passes we tend to exaggerate the wrongdoings of others and underplay our own faults. This kind of victim mentality is infinitely grave for us. We must learn to examine these events from a different perspective. We've been looking at the wrongs of others perhaps as a prosecuting attorney might. Let's try taking the view of the defense attorney. Let's try to see these events from the angle of the people who hurt us. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding. Was it an accident? Maybe the person who harmed us was injured. Perhaps they were spiritually sick. “We avoid retaliation or argument. We wouldn't treat sick people that way. If we do we destroy chances of being helpful.”
