Willing to aim toward perfection

Accepting step 6 in its entirety sounds daunting. Having all of our character defects removed would mean total perfection in an instant. We need not expect that, but be entirely willing to aim toward perfection.

Only Step One, where we made the 100% admission we are powerless over alcohol, can be practiced with absolute perfection. The remaining 11 steps state perfect ideals. They are goals toward which we look, and the measuring stick by which we estimate our progress. Seen in this light, step 6 is still difficult, but not at all impossible. The only urgent thing is that we make a beginning, and keep trying. There may be some things we cannot give up just yet. But we should never say to ourselves “I will never give this up!”
